It is the only commandment Jesus issued with all the authority of heaven and earth. The only commandment He issued to the Church. Obedience to this commandment produces a verbal confession of Jesus' Lordship and Paul states that such a confession is necessary to salvation. What God are we worshiping if we choose which commandments to obey and which to ignore? Are we like the scribes and Pharisees who had shut up the Kingdom of heaven against men? Who did not enter themselves nor allowed others? By our interpretation of the commandment found in Acts 1:4, are we preventing souls from making the confession of salvation?
Jesus said, "You are my disciples if you keep my commandments." What does that make us if we do not keep His commandments? Surely the commandment given to Christians is more important than any other commandment Jesus gave? If obedience is key to being a disciple of Jesus, then disobedience is key to missing salvation. Moreover, redefining Jesus' commandment to His Church in such a way that the Church ignores it is integral to ensuring that no one becomes Jesus' disciple and His death is in vain.
